The natural camoflauge of this mollusk demonstrates several aspects of the form crossing the line and extending the boundary of one side while chewing away at the other side. The drama of the color, the iconic possibilities of the mollusk and the flag like quality of the painted areas make a reference to the Disc Paintings of Paul Reed, the Targets by Ken Noland as well as other works by Alma Thomas, Tom Downing, Howard Mehring, Sam Gilliam and Morris Louis. The scale of these works is modest and brings me back to an early interest in the paintings and teaching notes of Paul Klee.
