  Anne Truitt's writing gives life messages for all and an insight into one of the finest Artists of our time.

  Friday, March 8, 1996 the Washington Post published a review of Anne Truitts latest journal. At the first opportunity I will read it and I would recommend all of her books.

  For those who are not acquainted with her work: The "sculptures" are minimalist three dimensional paintings. It is the logical direction of where Color Field painting needed to go. Ms. Truitt's work is much more rigorous than most of her male contempories. I've handled a few of them in exhibit installation and they are superbly crafted Museum quality works.

• Robert Irwin Bibliography a sharp thinker! Susan Jurist the author of this Bibliography recommends Johanna Drucker's book, A Century of Artists Books.

• The Shape of Content, Ben Shahn, Harvard University Press, 1957, ISBN 0-674-80570-4 (paper)

  EVERY young artist should read this book there are some parts that are a litle dated because he speaks a little about the debate of having Art Departments in Universities at a time when Universities had Art History Departments but not departments of Studio Arts.

• The Collected Writings of Robert Motherwell, edited by Stephanie Terenzio, Oxford University Press, 1992, ISBN 0-190-507700-8

  Robert Motherwell was active in promoting and editing literature about art and by artists. The Document of Modern Art is one of his great accomplishments.

• Theories of Modern Art, a source book by Artists and Critics, Herschel B. Chipp with contributions by Peter Selz & Joshua Taylor, University of California Press, 1968 ISBN 0-520-01450-2

  This book is designed to be a textbok for the study of artists and criticism. Excellant reference material. The late Joshua Taylor was director of the NCFA which became the NMAA. I learned a lot from the exhibitions that he inspired while he was the director. I never realized how much his presence contributed to the quality of the exhibitions until he was gone.

• ODD MAN OUT, A Memoir of the Hollywood Ten, Edward Dmytryk, Southern Illinois University Press, 1996, ISBN 0-8093-1998-5

  I just recieved this book from my daughter, Lydia who is a student at USC & a student of art & film. Thanks Lyd!

• Concerning the Spiritual in Art, Wassily Kandinsky, Dover, 1977

• Sounds, Wassily Kandinsky, Yale University, 1981

• Sexual Personae, Camille Paglia, Vintage Books a division of Random House, 1990 Yale University ISBN 0-679-73579-8

  I believe that Ms. Paglia and I are about the same vintage just different models. She is one of the writers I find an affinity for because sexual imagery is important for the understanding of many works of Art.

• Female Perversions, the temptations of Emma Bovary, Louise J. Kaplan, Doubleday, 1991,

  Robin Moore recommended that I read this book after reading Sexual Personae.

• Leaving Town Alive, confessions of an Art Warrior, John Frohnmeyer, Houghton-Mifflin, 1993, ISBN 0-395-65571-4

  If you care to understand part of the NEA debate this is a must read.

• The Tradition of the New, Harold Rosenberg, Thames & Hudson, Ltd. 1962

  Mr. Rosenburg's work provides a good basic understanding of where Art was heading in the 1960's . Still Relevant!

• Baudelaire, Art in Paris 1845-1862, Translated & Edited by Jonathan Mayne, Phaidon Publishers, Inc. 1965

  Raoul Middleman introduced me to Baudelaire & Apollonaire while I was in Art School. I thank him for the introduction and it has been useful information.
